Q: What does the name Joss mean?

A: Joss very loosely translated means: Fortune, Luck, Happiness, etc. But it means good or Bad Fortune, Good or Bad Luck, Happy or Unhappy. You are in control of your Joss.

Q: What is the difference between Joss Cues and Joss West?

A: Joss Cues was started in 1968 by Dan Janes and Bill Stroud. In 1972 Dan and Bill decided to go their separate ways and Joss West was born. Joss Cues is the original company and is still in Towson, Maryland.

Q: Are Joss Cues hand made?

A: As far as I know there is no cue "Hand made". All cue makers use an assortment of machines to create their cues lathes, milling machines, drill press, routers, etc. Some cue makers use CNC equipment, some don't. BUT nobody whittles a cue out with a pen knife, and if they did you wouldn't want it.

Q: What makes one cue cost more than another?

A: Man hours. The amount of time it takes to make your cue determines the major part of the cost. That is why a fancy cue costs more than a plain cue. Materials are a factor but time is the big cost difference.

Q: What kind of tip is used on a Joss?

A: Most of the cues I make will have a Triangle tip. I also use Champion or Crown, and I have been experimenting with a layered tip that we are having made in Japan. The jury is still out on that one.

Q: Why do you only use a stainless steel joint?

A: It's the best joint there is. (In my opinion) Steel is harder to work and costs more than plastic. If plastic was better I would definitely use it on my cues. Unfortunately, it's not. I have used ivory and still do on some of my more expensive cues. It's a nice material, but not as strong as steel, and contrary to popular opinion ivory does not change the hit of a cue. The tip, ferrule and shaft will, but not the joint.

Q: Does Joss Cues make custom Cues?

A: Yes, I make about ten or twelve custom cues a year. I don't think a custom cue can be created any faster. A true custom cue has to be designed, and then made. It’s tough to create and make a custom cue in a month. To make more then ten or twelve custom cues in a year is impossible.

If you have a question other than what's listed above about the Joss Cue you have, or about the one you want to order by e-mail, call me and I will do my best to help.
